Shining the Spotlight on Francine Watson's Career Journey at PokerStars

27 JANUARY 2025

Francine Watson Card (1)

Francine Watson has had a remarkable career at PokerStars, growing from a TV producer for the European Poker Tour to her current role as Associate Director of Creative and Content. Along the way, she’s worked on impactful projects like winning the Global Poker Award for Best Live Stream and producing the Netflix documentary KidPoker about Daniel Negreanu. In this post, Francine shares insights into her journey, the challenges she’s overcome, and what keeps her inspired at PokerStars.

Can you describe your first role at PokerStars and what attracted you to join?

I came from a background in sports broadcasting, and my journey with PokerStars began in 2004 when I joined as a TV producer for the European Poker Tour (EPT). I didn’t know much about poker, but I was immediately drawn to the game’s dynamic personalities and the rich stories each player brought to the table. The opportunity to bring those stories to life on TV was irresistible, and that’s been my passion ever since.

Were there specific projects or milestones that stand out as pivotal moments in your career?

One milestone that stands out was producing the first live broadcasts for the EPT in 2007. At that time, streaming live poker tournaments wasn’t the norm, so we were ahead of the curve. A more recent achievement I’m proud of was winning the Global Poker Award for Best Live Stream, alongside my fantastic team. I would say that developing new formats is always fun. For example, bringing shows like ‘Shark Cage’ and ‘The Big Game on Tour’ to TV screens and working with celebrities like Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo and Aaron Paul on the ‘Duel’ series. Also, 10 years ago, my colleague Gary Davis and I produced and directed the feature-length Netflix documentary ‘KidPoker’, about professional player Daniel Negreanu.

What challenges did you face during your career journey, and how did you overcome them?

The road to success is never without its hurdles. A major challenge came in 2020 and 2021 when live poker events were paused due to the pandemic. There was nothing to stream, and we had to pivot quickly. We took inspiration from the online poker world, building a virtual venue, creating dynamic visual assets, and expanding our commentary team. Using a remote studio and gallery, we delivered engaging broadcasts, which kept us connected with fans and players during an uncertain time.

Is there a piece of advice you wish you’d received earlier in your career?

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received is that conflict is often just passionate people working together to make an idea even better. It’s not personal. I also learned that the world won’t end if I miss a Zoom call—balance is key!

What kind of support or resources has PokerStars provided that has helped you grow your career?

PokerStars has always supported my growth in numerous ways. From providing resources to develop new shows and formats to creating opportunities for leadership roles, I’ve had the chance to take on increasing responsibilities. As Associate Director of Creative and Content, I now oversee teams responsible for everything from brand campaigns to live events and TV production. PokerStars also champions diversity, with initiatives like women-only tournaments and networking events that have helped me grow my professional network and build meaningful relationships.

What motivates you to stay with PokerStars and continue contributing to its success?

PokerStars offers a range of exciting challenges and opportunities, which makes each day different from the last. The variety of projects I’m involved in—from live streaming and podcasts to design and partnerships—keeps me engaged and constantly learning. The teams I work with are incredibly talented and dedicated, and their passion for poker and excellence is a huge motivator for me. At the heart of everything we do is a genuine commitment to the players, and that’s what keeps me passionate about my work.

Is there a mantra or personal philosophy that has guided you through your career?

My career philosophy is simple: love what you do. My dad always encouraged me to find a vocation, not just a job. When you’re passionate about your work, it shows in everything you do. I’m fortunate to work on content that excites and inspires people, and that passion is what drives me every day.

Reflecting on my time at PokerStars, I realize how much the company has supported my growth and allowed me to evolve in my role. I’m excited to see what the future holds and continue contributing to PokerStars’ success, all while staying true to my passion for storytelling and innovation.
