Four years ago, Iva Balkanska joined PokerStars as a CRM Specialist, eager to combine her professional expertise with her passion for the brand. Can you describe your first role at PokerStars and what attracted you to join?

Four years ago, I embarked on my journey at PokerStars as a CRM Specialist. My attraction to the company was multifaceted. Leveraging my existing expertise in CRM, I was also a devoted PokerStars player, granting me an intimate understanding of the brand's market presence and unique value proposition. More importantly, I recognized PokerStars as a dynamic environment filled with opportunities for professional growth, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package. It was the perfect confluence of personal passion and career aspiration.

Were there specific projects or milestones that stand out as pivotal moments in your career?

One of the most significant moments in my career was managing the CRM campaign for PokerStars’ 20th anniversary during my first year. It was a huge vote of confidence, and I truly appreciated the trust placed in me. As I progressed, I was fortunate to experience many growth opportunities that enhanced my understanding of the business and contributed to my professional development. Within eighteen months, I was promoted to CRM Manager, where I led the team’s strategic initiatives. In my third year, I took on the role of Customer Marketing Manager, which gave me a more comprehensive view of the operations. In 2024, I was honored to win the Rising Star Award at the PokerStars Marketing Awards and also received the Best Team Moment Award, which was a proud recognition of our collective achievements. My journey continued with my promotion to Senior Customer Marketing Manager, allowing me to contribute further to PokerStars’ strategic direction and success. Each of these milestones has played a key role in shaping my career and deepening my connection to the company.

What challenges did you face during your career journey, and how did you overcome them?

My career journey, intrinsically linked to the growth of my team, has presented its share of challenges. Primarily, I've focused on maximizing my ability to support and empower my colleagues, particularly during periods of rapid organizational change. Overcoming these challenges has been a collaborative effort. The exceptional individuals and leadership team I work alongside have provided invaluable guidance and support. Furthermore, PokerStars' commitment to continuous learning and development has equipped me with the tools and knowledge necessary to navigate complexities. Without the unwavering support of my colleagues and the company's investment in my growth, I would not have achieved my current professional and personal development.

Is there a piece of advice you wish you’d received earlier in your career?

Reflecting on my career, I recognize the profound impact of constructive feedback. It has been instrumental in my development. Therefore, if I could offer earlier advice, it would be to emphasize the importance of consistent, candid feedback in all professional interactions. Leaders, in particular, should seize opportunities to provide insightful observations, even from brief engagements. I now prioritize this practice, striving to offer meaningful feedback to everyone I collaborate with, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

What kind of support or resources has PokerStars provided that has helped you grow your career?

PokerStars distinguishes itself through its comprehensive support system, extending far beyond traditional benefits. My continued dedication to PokerStars stems from a compelling blend of professional freedom and unparalleled growth opportunities. Firstly, the company's progressive approach to work-life balance, evidenced by flexible hybrid work models and initiatives like the 'Take 20' program, empowers me to thrive both professionally and personally. Secondly, and equally vital, is the organization's unwavering commitment to employee development. My own journey, marked by three distinct roles within four years, underscores the abundance of opportunities to expand my business acumen and cultivate meaningful professional relationships. While I don't adhere to a specific mantra, my career has been consistently guided by a strong sense of ambition and a relentless pursuit of excellence. These core values have driven my professional trajectory, inspiring me to continuously strive for improvement and deliver exceptional results.
